We’re looking for Summer Interns! – Deadline Extended: May 28th

What’s a great way to spend your time this summer?  Making change in your community by organizing!

We are looking for high school and college students to be interns with us from June – August 2012. The internship is non-paid, but a great opportunity to earn community service hours and/or college credit. Interns will work with us to run campaigns to register and turnout young people to vote, while learning about the democratic and electoral process.

2012 Spring Texas League Fellows

Be apart of the upcoming 2012 Summer class of the Texas League Fellows Program! We’re looking for Texas’ next progressive leaders and organizers!

The Texas League Fellows is a leadership development program tailored to empower progressive-minded young leaders to become community based advocates and organizers. Over the course of the program, Fellows engage in a series of training sessions focused on self-development, leadership, strategy, field and online organizing, data management, and running successful campaigns. GOTV efforts for May 29th primary begin!

Blake Green give tips to Texas League Fellows about canvassing.

The March training session of the Texas League Fellows Program was the official kickoff to our get-out-the-vote (GOTV) campaign for the upcoming May 29th primaries. The Fellows will begin managing volunteer teams to register voters, canvass, and phone bank in targeted precincts in an effort to increase the voter turnout of young people of color in the upcoming May 29th Texas primary. Texas League of Young Voters Education Fund Granted Legal Permission to Intervene in Texas v. Holder Voter ID Lawsuit

Texas v. Holder Trial Scheduled for July 9-13 in Washington, D.C.

HOUSTON, Texas, March 30, 2012 – Today, the Texas League of Young Voters Education Fund announced that a federal court has granted permission for the non-profit organization to intervene in Texas v. Holder, a lawsuit aimed at preventing the implementation of a discriminatory voter ID law.

Represented by the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF), the Texas League of Young Voters Education Fund and a group of Black college students at Prairie View A & M and Texas Southern universities, originally filed the motion to be named defendant-intervenors on March 19. The court’s latest ruling brings the group one step closer to successfully defending the constitutionality of the Voting Rights Act and defeating the Texas voter ID law once and for all. Read more…

Texas League of Young Voters Education Fund Files Motion in Federal District Court to Intervene in Texas’s Discriminatory Photo ID Lawsuit

HOUSTON, Texas, March 20, 2012 – Yesterday, the Texas League of Young Voters Education Fund and a group of Black college students at Prairie View A & M and Texas Southern universities, represented by the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., filed a motion to intervene in a lawsuit to prevent the implementation of a discriminatory photo ID law, and to defend the constitutionality of the Voting Rights Act.  Read more…

Texas League Fellows: Young Activists in the Making

Reflections from Terin Bufford, a current 2012 Texas League Spring Fellow.

“Who makes words?”  “Get your weight up.” “WE ARE SOCIETY!”

These are all phrases that could be heard at the February training for the Texas League Fellows in Houston. We came together to learn how to make local change by empowering our peers and building smart campaigns.

Christina Sanders, state director of the Texas League of Young Voters, along with her team, did an amazing job with breaking down the information that was presented to the Fellows.

“Your fear of winning doesn’t make sense,” Sanders said as she spoke to us. “There’s no such thing as losing.” Read more…
