What do you want the candidates to talk about?

Here are some of the responses to this letter which have come in from around the country...

Guns and Drugs are out of control in this country. I would like to see more gun and drug control. I heard somebody say that it's possible but, first the goverment have to stop shipping it in. Also, why does the state of Iowa get the last say so about who's going to be the next president?

- Tammy B

(Campaign finance reform) get private money out of the political process along with speicial interests groups. break up the media conglomerates, and establish public news funded by public dollars, with no ties to corporate interests or money.

- Gene B

What's up with the occupation of Iraq? No to bombing Iran Single payer healthcare = Yes! Action regarding the economy and morgage forclosure should be in the forefront.

- Barry M

What issues are important to me?: A woman's right to choose. Universal Health care Utilizng Hemp as a major natural resource Creating Wind and solar powered everything Ending the war in Iraq

- Bianca P

What has happened in this country where a person can become president under questionable means and then continue year after year to just do what he wants without listening to the people who he is supposed to be representing? Why do we as a community continue to let this happen? He preys on the apathy that is rampant in our country....we need to stand up for our rights and real democracy. It is a real issue and it is important.

- Andrea P

I want the police to do their job and PROTECT THE PEOPLE - not abuse their power and violate people of color. I want politicians to recognize how important our environment is - we have ONE planet and need to fix the damages we have done to it for the sake of our grandchildren. DONT BE SELFISH. I want working and usable health care for all people, not just the wealthy. I WANT TO GOVERNMENT TO SUPPORT EDUCATION AND STOP SHUTTING DOWN SCHOOLS. How does shutting down school help public education? That doesn't even mathematically add up to making our communities smarter, you idiots. I want governments to support the arts, creative minds work so much differently than mathematical minds. They are both important in the creations of new things. Really, I would like youth to be able to apply to vote before the age of 18. If they apply it mean s they feel informed and confident in creating change in their communities. Yes. I'm the lyrical gangsta.

What are you going to do to make college accessible and affordable to all children? Will you support legislation like the dream act, which allows the children of illegal immigrant to go to state colleges at the instate cost instead of the outstate cost? Will you increase subsidized loans?

- Lauren H

THE WAR ON DRUGS has cost the country more money, bodies and social stablity then any other action of our government. Its racist and pointless. Let's just stop pretending that we can or should stop people from using and or abusing any substance they want to. More Coffee? Krisp Kreme? Tax. Regulate. Educate. Maybe use the extra money to finance free college education. Give people a real option in life. Build schools, close jails and send my brothers home!

Health care is unavailable or unbelievably expensive for most middle class persons, let alone those barely making minimum wage. Teachers get paid very little for their contribution to the future of our generation and studies now show that (infancy to preK) early childhood development is directly affecting children's learning and can shape patterns that growing kids hold on to throughout youth (including college) to adulthood. Better funding for teacher payrolls, daycare equipment, and to accomadate the needs of public schools should be substantially higher to give kids what they need to grow into adults who appreciate diversity and who go for their dreams, regardless of different cultures or backgrounds, or their color of skin, where they are from or how much money they make. There are still places in America where racism and discrimination are prevalent. That is appaulling. How do you plan to change the system so that everyone has a good chance and a fair chance at an education that will give us the confidence to accomplish our dreams? Many people feel like their vote doesn't matter because they don't have the money to lobby to get their voices heard. It should never be a matter of money. People matter no matter how much they make. Why should basic needs like healthcare and education only be available to those who can afford it?

- Tamara K

I believe that the major problem with America's government and politics is the domination by corporate money. Individual citizens simply can't compete with multinational corporations in political campaigns or in lobbying power. Much of corporations' political power is based on U.S. courts giving them the same rights as individuals. The courts have often misinterpreted the 1886 Supreme Court ruling in Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad as giving corporations the same constitutional right as individual citizens. Will you appoint Supreme Court Justices who will rule that the fourteenth amendment does not apply to corporations, and that only human beings are entitled to the constitutional rights afforded individual citizens.

Why is public housing in New Orleans -- that was boarded up, but not damaged by Hurricane Katrina -- scheduled for demolition on 12/11?

- Rosemary L

Will you support an immediate end to the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan? Will you oppose aggression against Iran including economic sanctions? Do you support repealing the USA Patriot Act and the Military Commissions Act? Do you support impeachment and prosecution of George W Bush and Dick Cheney? Do you support withdrawal from NAFTA, CAFTA and other free trade agreements? Do you support withdrawal from the World Trade Organization? Do you support regressive or progressive taxes? Do you support ending the independence of the Federal Reserve? Do you support a single payer not-for-profit health care system? Do you support ending corporate welfare? Will you support a constitutional amendment that ends "corporate personhood?" Do you support an independent investigation of 911?

Ty

Let's get out of Iraq, provide more support to Afghanistan, do ALL we can to minimize carbon emissions and clean up our soil/water/air, and provide health care for all.

- chris w

What are you willing to commit to the rebuilding of New Orleans and to Coastal Restoration? Even though the Presidential Commission on Debates did not select New Orleans as a site, would you participate in a non-sanctioned debate there?

- Linda S

Fighting for and acknowledging the importance of same-sex couple in our county and making sure they are protected under the law. Marriage rights, civil unions, access to health care for the entire LGBT community. Especially transgender people. and finally denouncing the bigotry of the Gay Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender community. HIV/AIDS is still alive an prevalent however, LGBT does not equal HIV/AIDS!!

How soon will we be leaving Iraq? Do you plan on attacking Iran? Can I be certain that affordable emergency contraception, birth control & abortions will be available for all women in the country? Will there be any effort to change sex education from abstinence only so that teenagers are ACTUALLY knowledgeable enough to make good choices? What will be the policy on immigration? I'm with the Portland League up in Maine. I'm really concerned about how our society is chewing up land for suburbs that are unsustainable, expensive to maintain, and unaffordable for working people. Will any of the candidates speak to the issue of how we can encourage urban housing and transportation that make cities awesome, affordable places to live, and in the process put a check on suburban sprawl?

- Samuel F

The juvenile justice system was founded as a way of keeping young people out of adult jails, because it recognized the great differences between juvenile and adult offenders. But in the last 30 years, so-called "tough of crime" policies have lead to the near vanishing of a distiction between the juvenile and criminal justice system. More and more young people are being sent to adult jails and prisons, and only 11 states do not permit the detention of juveniles in adult facilities. What will your campaign do to ensure that juveniles are never placed in adult facilities?

1.) Health Care, at least at a basic level, for everyone, to be paid for with our tax dollars 2.)Exit Iraq RIGHT NOW, and use the billions of dollars to fund health care and other social programs 3.) Use government funding to build BASIC apartment housing for people who are currently homeless.

- Anne S

I'm concerned about the cost of health care. As my husband looked for full-time work while I freelanced, we were paying between $800 and $1000 PER MONTH for poor health care coverage. We couldn't do anything cheaper because no personal health insurance program would take my husband because he has a preexisting condition--hemophilia. It's not as if he could control his genes at birth in order to have affordable health care coverage in his thirties! So, I found a job with benefits, and even with the company paying for some of it, the insurance's cut from my pay check for poor coverage was major compared with just five years ago. Plus, I was forced to pay for child care because I no longer worked from home. I think it's absurd that people are forced to compromise their career choices and how they would prefer to raise their children just for the sake of health insurance.

- Liz S

We need to help our veterans returning from Iraq/Middle East - my idea is to make a waiver or pool of insurance for Vets to allow them to transport other Vets and other people without liability. This may not on the surface seem like a big thing but with a little looking in to it you will see their need and the huge resource of people who want to lend them cars and their time/support/resources - maybe this is more to help us help them!

- ErnestO S

How can Americans compete in a global economy when they and their families have to go in debt to pay for an education that young people in other countries get for free?

- Carlana R

Ask the candidate to comment on the many noose hanging going on all over the country. And if they are president , what action would they take about this and other hate crimes,(against Black Folks) in this country

- E. Richard P

It's all about how the votes are COUNTED ! We need to BAN ELECTRONIC VOTING, and reclaim our Democracy through our ability to have our votes counted as intended via PAPER BALLOTS and counted at the precincts in public view. THEN WE CAN BELEIVE IN OUR COUNTRY AGAIN ! WHEN THE PEOPLE IN OFFICE ARE ACTUALLY THOSE CHOSEN AND ELECTED BY WE THE PEOPLE. NOT PLACED THERE BY THE SUPREME COURT OR RIGGED INTO OFFICE VIA ELECTRONIC VOTE SWITCHING AND RIGGING.

- Toni S

Yes, LOYV, the whole Iowa thing is a bit much. What really irks me is the way the primaries are staggered in the first place. PA's is in May. MAY! Last time half the candidates dropped before we even had our primary. PA doesn't count at all in the primary, Kerry was already picking out his convention suit when I went to the polls in May of 04. Michigan has the right idea but its a little hap-hazard to have states changing their dates all over the place. Next thing you know New Hampshire will be holding its primary on fourth of July weekend the year before the election just to beat the crowd. Here is my proposal. MOst of our states have primaries on the same day as several other states as it is. And the reason the candidates want it staggered is so they can visit each place in turn and do their campaigning. So I propose we divide the country up into six primary zones, NE, SE, NC, SC, NW and SW. Then hold primaries for six consecutive weeks in each region of the country. And DON'T POST THE RESULTS OF ANY OF THE ELECTIONS UNTIL ALL SIX REGIONS ARE DONE!!! This way we will all have the opportunity to vote for the candidates we feel truly represent us. Thanks for listening, Lisa Stolarski, Pittsburgh PA

- Lisa S

There are many important issues, but they secondary if we don't have a country to work them out in. The number one issue that candidates need to lead on is the great difference between our Constitution and what is currently happening in government. Our inspirational role in our world family is at stake. Talking about the importance of a good lock for your front door is ludicrous if the house in on fire.

- Jeffrey A

1. Higher education costs are rising faster than student loans can cover them. The United States is falling way, way behind other countries in producing an educated workforce. What will you commit to doing to turn this situation around?

Anita

- Anita J

Too often young people are taken for granted in the workplace. Across the country youth experience some of the harshest cases of abuse in their places of employment. It's important that the next president makes protecting workers' rights, a priority by signing into law the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), a bill that would ensure that the rights in the workplace are more strictly enforced nationwide.

- Carl L

I am not young, but many people I care about are. The level of debt that young people are carrying is crushing, completely incommensurate with their earning ability in this economy. This turns them into indentured servants for years after school, if not permanently. This is partly due to predatory lending practices, and partly to skyrocketing tuition, even at community and state-supported colleges. What do you plan to do to give this generation a chance to stand on their feet and use their ingenuity to benefit our world, rather than merely pay off debt?

- Rachel F

Get universal health care- government if need be; that's better than HMO's - and enforce benchmarks for progress in Iraq (forget troop withdrawal deadlines; trying to get them past a veto is fruitless & pointless - guerilla theater for grown-ups).

- brandt s

As a young person, there aren't a lot of options for health care coverage. Right now I'm uninsured and pissed off that I can't afford insurance or care should I get sick. I want a Single Payer Universal Health Care system NOW! We all know that's what America wants and needs. I promise you as a voter I won't EVER settle for less. Will you?

- Felicia T

judge paul maloney was nominated by george bush for a federal judge after,he has stolen a election from the people who live in benton harbor ,mi.the prosecutor failed to produce evidence to show that the outcome of the election was affected to warrant setting aside the election.we need a investigation into this matter; as soon as possible;;;

- rev edward p

I want to know if any of the canidates are going to just let the GOP steal another election and then go run and hide the morning after the election just like Kerry did and not yell from the mountains demanding a secure hand recount!! We proved as democrats during 2000 and 2004 that we cab get our voters to the polls, and they will stand in the rain for hours to vote...but we were failed by those that deny all the election fraud, expecially in Ohio which is brewing up to be the perfect storm of BOE fraud again. What are these canidates going to do different to confront these issues early on?

- Jennifer A

I want to ask the candidates if they're committed to the funding of green collar jobs training programs, so that low income communities of color around the United States are invited into and benefit from the green economic revolution & the sustainability movement. www.greenforall.org for more information - there are alot of League peeps working on this...

- Alexander C

Global warming is a serious threat and needs to be treated like one. Scientists say that the minimum standard we need to set is to reduce carbon emmissions 80% by 2050 and jump start by cutting them in half over the next ten years. At the same time, we want solutions that won't have negative impacts for generations to come--nuclear energy is expensive and highly dangerous. It isn't a viable option. What is your plan to reach that goal and prevent the political, social, and economic catastrophes that would be the result of climate change?

- Elizabeth W

I'd like to know what the candidates plan to do to protect reproductive choice and improve access to all types of reproductive health services for all communities in the United States.
