At the League, we’ve been sure from Day 1 that the spate of “Voter ID” laws being passed around the country would stop exponentially more eligible voters from voting than they would stop cases of voter fraud. But it’s nice to have that confirmed by the numbers; a new study shows that up to 700,000 young minority voters may be disenfranchised by Voter ID laws this year.
The study was released on Monday by the Black Youth Project, who stated, ‘Our estimates indicate that turnout amongst youth of color will be reduced significantly in states where such laws have been passed, and the consequences will be of particular importance in battleground states like Florida and Pennsylvania.”
Although the fate of some ID laws is still in the hands of the courts, the study concludes, “Extensive voter mobilization and education efforts will be crucial to ensure high levels of turnout amongst young people in November.” Don’t we know it!
