Press Release:
New Coalition Unveils Plan to Get Good Jobs, Green Economy
The Making Milwaukee Green Coalition (MMGC) is unveiling its platform to shape a sustainable, Green Milwaukee. At a time when the nation's economy is in crisis, a group of concerned citizens is coming together to make sure Milwaukee has a brighter future. This press event kicks off a campaign to educate Milwaukee residents on the vision and principles of how the federal economic recovery money should be spent to create healthy communities for Milwaukee's inner city residents.
MMGC will present ideas on ways in which immediate, job-creating projects can increase energy independence and improve Milwaukee's crumbling urban infrastructure. This unique group's plan also provides urban agriculture opportunities that will lead to healthy lifestyles for central city residents.
The coalition is made up of community organizers, leaders in Green construction, experts in urban agriculture, environmental organizations, and voters. For the last several months the group has been meeting with elected officials, local business owners, homeowners, and concerned citizens. Through this process MMGC developed their green platform.
"The people need to understand what is at stake here" says Lanisha Martin of the League of Young Voters Education Fund of WI. "Residents need to understand that we give up our sustainability every time we import vegetables and energy rather than get it from our backyards." Lanisha has been involved with state and national efforts advocating for a green economy, most recently at Powershift 09 .
The press conference will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday at the Simmons Project - Rehouse (2327 N. 6th Street), an energy efficient smart house being built by Bert Simmons, a local builder and green activist. The rehouse is being built in the heart of Bronzeville and is an example of the type of project that MMGC believes will improve inner city resident lives, create thousands of jobs, and make Milwaukee a more sustainable place to live.
