Parents,Teachers, and students came together to empower all of the women and girls who attended this wonderful event. SLC Training

The League Of Young Voters Education Fund is coming together with our community to give our youth something positive and fun to do during the summer of 2011. The SLC  Training program is offered to inner city youth form the ages of 17-23, and  is based upon helping our youth develop the appropriate skills to be Leaders in their communities. The Training program is a 8 week session, 6 weeks of training and 2 weeks to complete a final project. Through this our interns will develop leadership skills, learn how to get engaged with the people of the community, do multiple field projects and help prepare more future leaders. This program is great for anyone who loves to talk and even for those who don’t we will brake you out of that shell. Currently we have 5 interns working with us as we speak. There are 10 spots available, there is a application that needs to be filled out and a essay needs to be submitted along with the application. The application process is going on now, if anyone  is interested here is the link to complete the application, http://bit.ly/ki9Wk3

Winning the War on Voting by Getting People IDs

The #1 item on the League’s 2011 agenda is fighting back in the War on Voting by helping 30,000 low-income youth get new IDs this year.

Text “ID” to 69866 to get the ID requirements in your state.

It’s our job to make sure that we get young people IDs and keep them informed. That’s why we’re partnering with Rock the Vote to spread awareness about the new laws. Not only will we be launching a massive media campaign- we’re also going to provide buses to get young people to the DMV to get new IDs throughout the next six months.

Briefcase Brigades in Houston

In Houston, a group of young people went to their legislators to demand action on youth unemployment. They brought their resumes with them to let them know that they are ready and willing to work if their politicians are ready to invest in job creation. Check out the photos!

An Open Letter to President Obama: You Brought Down the Boogie Man, Now Bring Back the Hope!

Congratulations Mr. President, you’ve had an amazing week. Not only did you silence the haters by producing your long-form birth certificate (and kudos on roasting Donald Trump like a bag of Planters peanuts), but you also took out the world’s most wanted criminal. During the campaign, your detractors questioned if you had the heart to be our Commander-in-Chief, but boy were they wrong! I can only imagine how former President George W. Bush felt when he found out that you were the one that actually “smoked him out!”

I know that there are dozens of conspiracy theories out there, including that Osama Bin Laden isn’t actually dead or that he actually died years ago. But you know what? Sometimes you’ve got to let the haters hate. Trust me, these people are just trying to steal your shine. To me, it doesn’t even matter if Bin Laden died yesterday, years ago and/or if he is still in a cave in the hinterlands of Afghanistan. Either way, the absence of the mastermind behind 9-11 represents an end of era, and you are responsible for ending that chapter of American history.

Of course, there are those in Washington D.C. that argue that we may be less safe now, and that we need to actually make even more investments in our military-industrial complex. But I don’t buy that. Bin Laden’s death presents your administration with new opportunities to think seriously about our foreign policy and most importantly, the size of our defense budget. Because even if we only reduce the spending on the special forces operations that were chasing Bin Laden, our nation could be saving billions of dollars a year and reinvesting in our nation’s economy.
