Budget Protest Rally in Milwaukee, Saturday at 1pm

If there has ever been a time that our generation needs to be united, organized and educated, NOW is that time. One of the populations that will be most affected by the changes being proposed at the capitol are young people.

This is our defining moment to stand up and fight.  Join Us!

Block Party!

The third annual AUC “Block Party” was a perfect place for us to engage collegiate youth about the democratic process as well as to recruit volunteers for upcoming projects in the community. The event was held at the Perdue Lot on the campus of Morehouse College from 3:00pm-8:00pm. Students were in attendance from Clark Atlanta University & Spelman College as well. There were several activities and games for the young scholars to participate in.

The DJ issued our charge for attendees to find unregistered voters at the “Block Party” and bring them to our LYVEF table-several of them turned this challenge into a competitive game. Check out the photos in the slideshow below!

Pittsburgh Community Cleanup

In memory of Dr. MLK, The League of Young Voters in GA decided to be of service to all mankind and contribute to improving a community. City Council member Cleta Winslow of District 4 along with several churches and organizations coordinated a two day clean up for “The Pittsburgh Community”, an impoverished, drug-infested, prostitution-populated and high risk home invasion neighborhood.

The Community Cleanup produced over forty volunteers that completed landscape beautification operations such as raking leaves, shoveling ice from sidewalks, picking up debris, and cutting down shrubs & bushes. Some of the most frequent items I bagged up to be discarded were cigarette boxes, needles, potato chip bags, used condoms, and juice cartons.

During the debrief one resident stated, “improving the appearance was the key to changing the negative reputation associated with the Pittsburgh community.” The 30 year Pittsburgh community native emphasized that “new property investors, banks and business were turned away from helping the community expand because of how poorly it looked.” He told a heart breaking story of how one of the local grocery stores had recently sold him Bologna that was over six months old; he did not realize the product was outdated until after he returned home.

The League Of Young Voters Education Fund will actively be involved in the Pittsburgh Community’s  improvement and will host several voter registration drives.

Atlanta LYVEF’s State of the Union Party

On January 25th, during President Obama’s State of the Union address, the League hosted a unique live panel called State of the Union 2011: Roadmap to Progress. We’ve assembled an amazing team of organizers, political minds and entertainers tthat discussed President Obama’s speech live on Ustream. We flooded the Internet with Tweets (#BarackTalk) and Facebook updates to get the word out that the next generation’s needs cannot be ignored. Too much is going on for us to not be involved in the conversation and that’s why we are going to show the world that our generation is paying attention.

The Georgia chapter hosted a live viewing of the panel & speech at iLounge in East Atlanta. The objective was to bring young people together to party and politick. What’s wrong with partying with a purpose? Business Cards, Laptops & Martini’s on deck!

Trick Or Vote!

On October 30, 2010 Trick or Vote premiered in Atlanta.  The League of Young Voters Education Fund rallied volunteers to encourage people to go to the polls and vote on November 2nd.

During the day, the volunteers had on costumes and walked door to door with the trick-or-treaters to discuss the importance of voting, determin if residents needed a ride to the polls, and make sure they knew what items to bring to their polling site. At 864 knocks, we barely fell short of our 1,000 doors knocked goal!

Immediately following the costumed canvass, The League of Young Voters sponsored a Halloween masquerade party in association with marketing and promotional groups FCC, Atlbarz, Lady Cartel, and Dynasty Ent. to promote the upcoming election in two days. The event was held at a gorgeous venue called AJA in Buckhead. There were two $500.00 prizes given away for the best female and male costume. It was a hard pick so the partygoers made the final decision by a majority VOTE!

Party With A Purpose Has Fun In The Sun!

For over a decade, every summer on Wednesdays there have been free live concerts given at Centennial Olympic Park. This park was built in Atlanta specifically as a historical memoir of the 1996 Olympics. You can enjoy everything from jazz to contemporary music performed by your favorite local and national touring acts. “Wind Down Wednesday” occurs the months of April through September from 5:30pm-8:00pm.

The League of Young Voters Education Fund started canvassing at “Wind Down Wednesdays” because this event turns out crowds weekly. The downtown park location proved to be beneficial for the “Party with a Purpose” campaign because couples were eating picnic style, individuals were dancing, and children were playing in the water fountains. The atmosphere embraced the model of comradery and interacting with others; which is sometimes a difficult task to accomplish.

We will be back every summer for this fun in the sun! Check out pictures of young people registering to vote after the jump!
